Oh, crap.
So, this Thursday, I'm leaving for...Australia.
You heard right. I'm going all the freaking way to the land down under. (Although it probably won't be the same without Steve Irwin...)
Anyways, the reason I'm going is because for a very long time now, my aunt (who is also my godmother, do lotsa stuff with her) has been attending World Youth Day's all around the world (Toronto, Germany, Rome, etc). And it so happens that this year, in 2008, WYD is being held in Australia. Now, back 4 years ago, when I heard Australia, I was like "OMGZ SIGN ME UP" (especially cause of friggin STEVE IRWIN whom I've always wanted to meet), since I was 12 years old and all. But really, how could I pass up an opportunity like this that would be paid for in FULL?
Anyways...WYD is basically a huuuuge gathering of youth from all over the world who converge in a city and do...catholic things...like prayer and catechisis and mass. And the pope comes along and it's all a really good show.
But for the lot of you that know me, I don't really consider myself much of a religious person.
I've been raised catholic throughout my whole existence here, part in due to family tradition. My grandmother from my mothers side is very, very religious. She's the kind that probably hasn't missed Sunday mass since she was 4, says a rosary every day, carries saint medals on her person at all times. But she's not into those Santero (um, Latin-based satanic witchcraft, for those of you who don't know) things. She's the real hardcore stuff. So mostly, all the sacraments I've gone through have been for her. The reason I attend mass every Sunday with them is for her.
But, all in all, although I personally don't find every single dogma of the Catholic religion to HAVE TO BE CORRECT ZOMG YOU'LL DIE WITHOUT THE BODY OF CHRIST *cough*, I still find that Catholicism, as with many other religions, generally (even if it may be only one facet of it) has a positive message, one of love and kindness towards others and oneself. So I stick with it. If only for that reason.
My dad was actually raised Muslim back in NYC, but has recently turned to a more generally spiritual outlook on life. He doesn't stick with his Muslim dogmas either. I don't want to bother delving into every detail, since there's so much, but if you HAVE heard of Biogenisis, that's one major thing he really enjoys and supports. Google it if you really care that much.
I tend to also participate in may of the events my dad attends. They're really all about personal and world healing, light, purification, love. That is what I think all religions should focus upon. They're not satanic or cult-like in any manner, they believe in God and angels and such. So it really brings much comfort to know that there are people who feel the same way about wanting to make the world a better place, and not having to do it through THE BODY OF CHRIST OR ELSE HELL NAO ZOMG.
*cough*
Nothing against Catholics, personally almost all of my friends are Catholic, including Alex, so I do support the religion's IDEAS for the most part.
So, rewinding a bit.
On Thursday, July 10, I'm flying up to New Jersey to meet the group me, my aunt, a cousin of mine, and my cousin's friend will be joining. The next day, we fly out to Vancouver. Our flight was moved to the freaking MIDNIGHT flight that day, so we'll be spending the day there as we pick up 2 more of my cousins. Ugh. That night, we begin the pretty much 24 hour flight to Australia.
Once I'm there, we have a day to rid ourselves of some of that jet lag, but then we'll be attending chatechisis (religion class) every morning, WYD activities during the afternoon, service and aid and such, with only minimal tourist-ing on the side. On Saturday, July 19, we being our '
ilgrimage' out to a field used for the Olympics one year where we will be camping the night to see the pope at mass the next morning. Yes, with tents, and sleeping bags, and no real bathrooms, and canned food. Eh, it could be worse.
And then Monday we fly back to Vancouver, then to New Jersey, where we'll spend the night. And by Tuesday, I'll be back in good old Miami.
So, here I am, making last minute preparations, somewhat wishing I hadn't made this desicion, but convincing myself it's a once in a lifetime opportunity (no matter all the bloody religion classes they'll be feeding us) and already missing my Alex throughout this whole shebang.
We're renting a world phone, calls will be a dollar a minute, texts 50 cents to send and 10 to receive. I'm sure there'll be WiFi in some places...but still...its so far.
So, so far.
Anyways...I'll be sure to take as many pictures as possible, since I'm packing all of my memory sticks and batteries and chargers and what not.
Wish me luck. I guess I'll...pray for you guys, or something.
I'm going there with an open mind to a place where I know will be filled with positive energy. End of story.
